Apparently, Saxby Chambliss, the Republican senator from Georgia, did not get the news flash that rape, contrary to popular GOP beliefs, is about violence and not about sex. The retiring senator proved his ignorance today when he blamed military sexual assaults on hormones. Yes, those hor-mones.
The Georgia Republican recalled that “several years ago when we had the first females go out on an aircraft carrier, when they returned to port, a significant percentage of those females were pregnant.”
“Was any investigation made by the Navy following that incident to determine whether or not all of those pregnancies occurred as a result of consensual acts?” he asked Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Jonathan Greenert.
The admiral replied that he did not have details of the incident immediately available, but he pledged to follow up.
Chambliss noted that Democratic proposals to modify the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) and take sexual assault reporting outside of the victim’s chain of command might not work because young servicemen were being driven by their “nature.”
“The young folks coming in to each of your services are anywhere from 17 to 22 or 23,” he pointed out. “Gee-whiz, the hormone level created by nature sets in place the possibility for these types of things to occur. So, we’ve got to be very careful on our side.”
Lawd have murcy! So, I guess it’s just part of nature for young men to be driven to rape women. And the military brass needs to figure out how to combat this natural occurrence of rape!!! I mean, why bother to stop Mother Nature if it’s part of God’s plan for predators to assault victims?
I just need for men to stop pontificating on rape and how/why it happens. I need for men to stop theorizing if my body has ways to shut an unwanted pregnancy down or if my body’s hormone levels will impact whether or not I will get pregnant from a rape. I need for men, whether they hold medical degrees or not, to just stop musing about the female body since they generally don’t have a fucking clue how it works.
I’m going to need for men to just automatically defer to women when it comes to discussing how our bodies work and to rape victims and anti-rape advocates on how/why rape happens. They clearly have a track record on saying foolish, inaccurate things, so they should not be trusted to provide accurate, informative opinions.
To Chambliss and other Republicans who are just itching to give their uneducated $.02 on rape and the female body: unless you’re going to express how horrible and offensive the crime of rape is, then just keep your mouth shut and keep your backwards opinions to yourself.
