Renee at Womanist Musings has a great piece up about the blatantly racist reporting done by the mainstream media during their coverage of the Boston Marathon attacks. These biased speculations and analyses are the norm as most mainstream media outlets and their reporters are stacked with mostly cis, white heterosexual men who have no problems with perpetuating racist and ethnic stereotypes.
This automatic assumption leads to often verbal and physical attacks on innocent citizens, most notably a Palestinian doctor who said she was attacked in the aftermath of the bombings. Here, this paragraph at Womanist Musings pretty much sums up why our society continues this same pattern of relegating people of color into ones who should always be deemed suspicious
When POC are targets of violence, it most certainly does not get the attention it deserves in the media because it does not fit the narrative that Whiteness has created about who is the victim and who is the perpetrator. When incidents like this happen, Whiteness feels entitled to their bigotry and this is specifically why Heba Abolaban became a target. In the wake of 9-11, I remember thinking how difficult it would be for Brown people and in the years since, I was proven correct. Whiteness sees no distinction between people of colour and has created us as one homogenous group set on destruction. There have been spikes in racial profiling and a reduction on civil liberties, all using the rhetoric of safety but none of this occurred after (Timothy) McVeigh.
