H/T to Shakesville for this post.
California Governor Jerry Brown on Thursday signed legislation that would require schools to teach the accomplishment of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people in American history lessons.
“History should be honest,’’ Brown said. “This bill revises existing laws that prohibit discrimination in education and ensures that the important contributions of Americans from all backgrounds and walks of life are included in our history books.’’
The article noted the legislation was sponsored by Sen. Mark Leno and pushed through a democratic state legislature. Of course, the signing was criticized by those on the “moral” right, namely by Calif.-based Traditional Values Coalition. In an exhaustive statement, the not-for-profit organization lambasted the signing, calling it a “far-reaching” bill that has “never-ending” harmful effects.
From Benjamin Lopez, the organization’s legislation analyst and advocate:
“Parents need to understand that SB 48 infiltrates every aspect of their child’s education. The gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender lifestyles will be presented in workbooks, textbooks and every supplemental material in a positive way and in a blatant way that promotes them as mainstream. It’s no longer solely boys and girls, just one more lifestyle choice that children should explore. Gender roles would no longer just mean male and female. Lesbians and gays would be classified as ethnic groups just like Latinos, Asians, and Blacks; which is something the US Supreme Court has refused to do. And all of this would have to be presented in one way and one way only…as positive lifestyles to try, engage in, accept and embrace. Students with another point of view would be victimized for sharing their objections to these lifestyles; even factual information. This bill is an affront to true education and to the values parents instill in their kids at home. We have failed at our core educational mission and yet we are now going to inject gay studies into the classrooms. It’s absurd and offensive.”
I don’t even know where to begin to dismantle such…filth and fear mongering.
The idea that this legislation “infiltrates” every aspects of a child’s education is a farce, plain and simple. This bill simply incorporates the achievements, setbacks and historic accomplishments of the GLBTQ community. This bill educates school children on the diverse struggle for basic civil rights many groups in this country have had to embark on in order to live quality, healthy lives.
It’s incomprehensible the so-called traditional values wing of America still wants to keep GLBTQ people, their lives and their struggles in the shadows, only to be exposed when mainstream American politicians, in a bid to appeal to social values voters, decide to use their so-called “alternative lifestyle” as a political football. This bill will have no impact on supposed gender roles as a person’s sexuality has no bearing on their supposed feelings about their gender. This bill does not penalize students with opposing viewpoints and does not victimize those who may cling to the bigoted opinions (often masquerading as traditional values) of their parents, peers and/or church ministers. It simply gives school children another facet of a minority group’s struggle for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
This bill is not an affront to “true education” (whatever the hell that is…) and to the values parents instill in their kids at home.” It does not seek to overrule a parent’s homophobic/bigoted feelings and attitudes towards GLBTQ individuals. It simply gives them another facet of American history.
It’s nonetheless predictable and laughable California’s extreme, pro-“traditional values” activists seeks to limit the spectrum of a child’s education in the name of protecting “true education.” Equipped with a facade of expressing concern over children’s education, the activists hiding behind the mantra of traditional values are using this bill’s supposed threat to parental rights to advance their viewpoint of a liberal agenda working to impose the acceptance of “alternative lifestyles” upon mainstream America.
