>No, this isn’t a joke. The Hill is reporting Texas Republican Louie Gohmert plans to introduce a bill to allow members of Congress to carry firearms in the District of Columbia and on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives.
“There is a rash of legislation further infringing on Second Amendment rights that has been unwisely proffered in the wake of events in Tucson,” Gohmert told The Hill in a statement regarding the proposed legislation. “If members of Congress wishes to carry a weapon in the federal District of Columbia, it should be permissible. Accordingly, we are in the process of drafting a bill that will allow members of Congress to do that.”
This is one of those news bits you can only shake your head at and chalk up to yet another politician paying homage to the special interest groups that fund his reelection bids and PACs. Gohmert feigning concern about the “rash” of legislation supposedly trampling on our Second Amendment rights is the biggest load of bull I’ve heard today (second to Sarah Palin’s defense of her use of inflammatory rhetoric, which backfired when people read through her BS).
It’ll be interesting to see if the NRA will get behind Gohmert’s efforts in the name of self-defense.
