>Sen. Caroline Kennedy?

>Yes, folks, the oldest daughter of President Kennedy is considering succeeding Hillary Clinton in her U.S. Senate seat in New York.

“I believe that she is considering it,” said her cousin Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has spoken to Ms. Kennedy about the matter during the past week. “A lot of people the last couple of weeks have urged her to do it.”

Ms. Kennedy called Gov. David A. Paterson on Wednesday to discuss the position, Mr. Paterson confirmed Friday. The governor will choose a replacement for Mrs. Clinton upon her expected confirmation as secretary of state next month.

“The conversation was informational,” Mr. Paterson said. “She did not express an interest in the Senate, but we talked about the Senate, so I got that she was just trying to get some information to determine whether or not she would like to have an interest in it. And that was it.”

While I believe Kennedy would be a safe choice, I wonder what would be her motivation? Does she have plans to finally enter the political realm (politics supposedly runs in the blood of all Kennedys, right)? What does she think she can do for New Yorkers? What issues would be on her agenda?

I think Kennedy should also be prepared for the backlash she could face. Let’s face it, nothing would boil the blood of Republicans the most is to see another Kennedy in the Senate. Her appointment would mobilize the Republican base, who will be told by their political operatives that anything and anyone in the center-left of the political spectrum is too radical for “real” American values.

If Kennedy is seriously considering this position, I think she needs to communicate to New Yorkers what she plans to bring to the table. Since she’s a newbie, I think Kennedy should also meet with Senate Democratic leaders to discuss what she thinks she could bring to the caucus.
