>Bar owner peddles racist t-shirts

>“We’re not living in the (19)40’s. Look at him . . . the hairline, the ears — he looks just like Curious George.”

That coming from Marietta bar owner Mike Norma, who’s peddling T-shirts with the image of Curious George peeling a banana with “Obama ’08” written underneath the image.

Here’s a link to the AJC article. The image is shown here below:

Pam Lindley of Marietta holds up the T-shirt in question as about a dozen people protested outside Mulligan’s bar in Marietta Tuesday. They object to the establishment selling a Curious George t-shirt that says ‘Obama in ’08.’ The bar has caused controversy in the past with its billboard messages.

The woman above said she joined the protest after reading about the t-shirt online.

“I don’t want people to think this is what Marietta is all about,” she added, motioning towards the tavern. “This is what some people think the South is still like. Marietta’s come a long way but I guess it’s still got a little ways to go.”

I’ve always believed that Sen. Obama’s run would bring out the hidden racism in people. From Sen. Clinton to everyday Joes, people have shown no shame in how they really feel about people of color, particularly within the past few years.

And this t-shirt is just another example. This restaurant owner hasn’t a clue about the historic use of the monkey as a negative portrayal of American black men. This restaurant owner hasn’t a clue about how his racist t-shirt are rehashing painful memories of the South’s Jim Crow past.

What do you think of the t-shirt? Is it racist? Why or why not?
